There was mourning in the Bariga area of Lagos after a family of four was burnt to death in a fire that started in the middle of the night.
The family was simply identified as ‘Eze’s family’, and lived at No. 13, Buraimoh street, Bariga area of Lagos.
The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasak Fadipe, confirmed the incident on Wednesday. He said the incident which claimed the entire family occurred at about 2.48 a.m.
According to Mr Fadipe, men of the service arrived the scene of the incident as soon as they got information about the fire, but because of the double burglary irons on the door and window of the apartment, they were unable to reach the victims in time.
“The apartment is a chemist store. The father, mother, and two children of ages five and eight were found dead inside the store.
“We advise that although one needs security in his or her house or business place, it should not be to the detriment of the people.
“Members of the family should always know the existence of their apartment whenever there is an emergency,” Mr Fadipe said.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained although some sources believe it was caused by candlelight.
Other sources claim that the fire started after electricity supply was restored to the area. The sources also claim the deceased mother was pregnant.
Fire incidents are becoming quite common not just in households but even at factories and workplaces. We reported sometime ago about the fire that engulfed Nigeria Breweries facility in Iganmu. In 2015, Prince Ebeano Supermarket in Lekki went up in flames, same day the Ebute-Meta plank settlement under Third Mainland Bridge went up in flames. Sometimes, the Fire Service have been accused of not arriving on time to do their jobs.
