Amid the security challenges in Edo State, Prof Paul Otasowie, a senior staff of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) was on Wednesday evening, reportedly killed by gunmen at his residence located at Ekehuan Road, in Oredo Local Government Area of the state.
It was also gathered that Otasowie, who lectured at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was shot during an attempted kidnap. And his demise has reportedly left the university in a state of mourning, Punch reports.
Confirming the sad incident, Michael Osasuyi, the university’s Public Relations Officer, said:
“We lost him yesterday. We are trying to gather the right information now (because) we are getting different versions.
“The first version said that it was an assassination (while) the second version said that it was armed robbery, that he was inside a car and they shot him.”
The varsity’s PRO noted that the deceased was a hardworking and devoted personality, describing his demise as a huge loss to the school.
“For now, the university cannot ascertain what has transpired. But we are sending delegates now to the house to meet with the family.
“We commiserate with the family and it is a big blow to the university. He was one of the persons who has ensured that work is done and done well,” Osasuyi added, noting that the university was worried about the security challenges facing the state.
Also, the PRO recounted how the legendary musician, Joseph Oseyemore, was recently abducted by gunmen, calling on the government to tighten its belt as regards the security issues in the state.
“The level of insecurity now is becoming something else. The vice-chancellor commiserates with the family and the school is mourning,” Osasuyi concluded.
The security issue in Edo is indeed quite alarming. Recall that three Policemen guarding a zoo in Benin were recently killed by gunmen, while the Head of the Zoo was abducted.
