Lagos State House Of Assembly Condemns Army Attack On LASPOTECH Students

The Lagos State House Committee on Education today condemned the brutalization of Lagos state Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) Students by the Nigerian Soldiers which took place last week during a peaceful demonstration staged by the Students to end the ongoing strike action rocking the institution.

For about three hours on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, Shagamu Road, especially frontage of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu main campus, and the entire Lambo-Lasunwon community was no-go area as solders militarized the axis and subjected the students to inhumane conditions.

Soldiers from the 174 Battalion from the Odogunyan Army Barracks and those attached to the special military security outfit, OP MESA, stormed the frontage of the institution to disperse the students who were staging peaceful protest against the incessant closure of their school.

After dispersing the protest with force, the soldiers went into students’ hostels dragging them outside and beat them and also made them to lay in the mud, as the entire Lambo-Lasunwon community became a ghost town.

The Panel which had the Students’ Union Leadership, the three Staff Unions (ASUP, NASU & SSANIP), the Management Team, Representatives of the Special Adviser on Education to the Governor, and Honorable Members including; Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi (Chairman, House Committee on Education), Hon. Funmi Tejuosho, Hon. Akeem Skunked and others in attendance was set up to ensure that the present crisis rocking the Polytechnic is permanently brought to a dead end.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi said the invasion of the Soldiers and the brutalization of the innocent Students who were only fighting for their rights was uncalled for.

Hon. Ogunyei then called on the Management of the Polytechnic to be more committed to the Welfare of the Students at large.

Speaking with, President of the students union, Comrade Dauda Lawal said the committee is committed to put an end to the on going strike.

Com. Lawal further urged the students to debunk information going viral that the students Union is committed to any of the parties.

“Greatest Laspotians, we can confidently inform you that the Lagos State House of Assembly, particularly, the House Committee on Education has taken over whatever issues culminating into the crisis bringing the Polytechnic backward and are committed to resolving these issues which would lead to the end to the strike action.

“We urge you all to continue to remain calm, and give your total support to the Students’ Union leadership. We are very committed to seeing that the crisis comes to an end and the return of academic activities on campus with immediate effect.

“Again, we urge you all to debunk any insinuations from any quarters that the Students’ Union is polarized. We stand not with the Staff Unions, Management Team or any individual but we stand only with the Students of the Citadel of learning.” He added.
